There is a global need to increase electricity transmission capacity due to rising energy consumption and the move to distributed, often renewable, energy generation. The conventional approach is to build new transmission lines. It can take many years to obtain planning approval to build such a line, especially when routes need to be through attractive landscapes or areas of high population density. During this period access to new generating capability is delayed and grid management companies can incur substantial network constraint charges.
Using a rigid, insulated cross arm allows the separation between arms to be reduced by eliminating the conventional suspension insulator, whilst maintaining operating separations to and between high voltage conductors. This allows new towers can be smaller and existing towers to be upgraded to higher voltages.
