EPL Composite Solutions Limited

EPL Composite Solutions Ltd (EPL) is a privately owned research and development company specialising in the application and commercialisation of products made from composite materials across a broad range of industries.

The Company was formed in 1992 in recognition of the need for a specialist design and prototyping resource to promote the uptake of then novel advanced composite materials.  The aim was to identify future commercial applications and secure support from various sources to conduct the underpinning R&D work.

This was part of an ongoing strategy to take products from ‘concept to market’ and share in the risk and returns from successful commercialisation. To date, EPL have been involved in 15 major research and development projects, resulting in the spin-off of 6 new and successful businesses, 3 joint ventures with major PLC companies and licensing of patented technology to 2 major European organisations.

National Grid High Voltage Labs -University of Manchester

HV research has been an integral part of the work of the EEPS group since the 1950’s when the first laboratory was opened at the University. The National Grid High Voltage Research Centre is now home to the largest HV laboratory of any UK University and is capable of testing equipment designed for use on the 400kV power system.

Research work in the facility is split into a number of areas. Particular areas of competency include transformer insulation and monitoring, polymeric insulation and power system transients. We develop condition monitoring and lifetime assessment techniques for ageing power system plant infrastructure, study all the technical issues related to application of novel insulation materials in power system plant, and participate into technology innovation for aerospace applications.
